As adults we tend to get caught up in a whirlwind of responsibilities between balancing work, family, and a social life. It is likely we often forget to return a missed call from mom or much less stop by to pay her a visit. However, my best advice for the cure to an extra busy and hectic week would in fact be to call your mother or grandmother!
Studies have found that calling your mom or grandmother can actually help reduce stress. Research proves that the sound of a mother’s voice releases a biochemical response which helps ease stress in individuals, similar to the effects of a hug on a stressed child. This released hormone is referred to as oxytocin and helps deliver soothing feelings whereas, cortisol is known as the stress hormone. In a study conducted by the University of Wisconsin a study found that a call from mom both increased oxytocin levels while also reducing cortisol level thus delivering less stress. This study also found that a simple call from mom served the same effect in reducing stress as an in person visit to mom. In conclusion, the participants who did not visit or call their mothers exhibited higher cortisol levels than those who did. This is why you may want to consider adding a weekly call to mom or grandma into your busy routine.
