Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder which affects the part of the brain responsible for all movement throughout the body. There are a few ways to help treat Parkinson’s disease and manage its symptoms.
The most common method used for managing symptoms associated with Parkinson’s is through the use of prescription medications or implantable devices to help ease body tremors. There do however, exist other forms of treatment outside of medication. Surprisingly enough, many patients remain unaware of these additional or alternative treatments which can also be widely effective in calming the disease.
The development of Parkinson’s disease in individuals serves as catalyst for the erosion of brain stem cells which eventually die off and lead to worsening symptoms. The causes of this condition are believed to be encouraged through contact with chemicals, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. This in conjunction with a lack of dopamine producing cells present in the brain can cause Parkinson’s to develop.
Symptoms of Parkinson’s disease can include stiffness in the body, slowed movement, poor posture, difficulty with walking and balancing, muscles tension, and lack of facial expressions. Some non motor signs and symptoms include stomach problems, depression or anxiety, cognitive impairment, trouble sleeping, loss of voice control and smell, problems swallowing, drooling and unexpected pains in the body.
Just as medication can help remedy some of the symptoms for this disease, exercise can also serve as a crucial part of treatment for Parkinson’s. Exercise induces our bodies to release dopamine into the parts of the brain which can be essential to patients with eroding brain stem cells. This will help aide the body in reducing issues associated with tremors or freezing muscles. Additionally the benefits from exercise can help to regulate mood disorders, depression, and anxiety in patients.
Some other forms of treatments for Parkinson’s include massage therapy, acupuncture, physical and occupational therapy, as well as singing.
