The House committee held a hearing on Thursday that went over safety and quality care in nursing homes. They reviewed reports of abuse, neglect and standard care in nursing homes today. Many incidences have been reported of horrific acts against patients in these nursing homes. It was time for a call to action from the government to ensure that these nursing homes are provided with quality care for these patients.
“Nursing home abuse is a serious concern and seniors who have been abused have a 300 percent greater chance of death in the 3 years following the abuse than those who aren’t abused. Up to 1 in 6 nursing home residents may be the victim of abuse or neglect every year.”
Representative Gregg Harper says that there have been countless acts of abuse and neglect as well as patient harm that has been occurring in nursing homes. He told about how dozens of patients during Hurricane Irma were left to die.
Gregg Harper says he is concerned whether or not the CMS has been fulfilling their responsibility to make sure that these nursing homes have the proper care. The hearing is titled, “Examining Federal Efforts to Ensure Quality of Care and Resident Safety in Nursing Homes.” The agenda will be to reduce cost and improve care.
